How to Select Potting Soils for Your 11 cm Pots

Posted on June 10, 2021

The 11 cm pot is a great choice if you want to be creative in your pot gardening. These pots are available in various sizes and shapes. You can choose the one that is most suitable for your gardening requirements. The following tips will help you select a suitable pot for your container garden.

The size of the container is largely dependent on your needs. A small container garden can accommodate half a liter pot. However, if you have a large container garden including an irrigation system or fountains, it will be necessary to use the larger size pot. For instance, a container garden with a fountain requires a higher water retention capacity than a container garden without a fountain.

The location of the container garden also determines the size of the pot. If you want a dry area, then the drainage should be deeper and hence you will need a bigger size pot. In contrast, if you have a very wet area, then the drainage is less important. It is important that the container garden drains well otherwise the roots may rot and create an unhygienic environment.

The type of plants that you are growing is another determining factor. If you are growing flowering plants, such as roses, then a wider pot with deeper drainage is required. On the other hand, container gardening with herbs will demand a smaller pot and hence smaller pots. The size of the pot also depends on whether you are using soil or light weight plant potting bench. Heavy plant pots will support the weight of the plant and also prevent it from sliding along the potting bench.

The height of the pot is also an important factor to consider. If you have taller plants, then the drainage is also important. Otherwise, the roots may rot due to heavy water retention. If you do not have any choice but to use a potting bench with deep roots, then the best bet is to use a pot that is proportionate in height to the bench.

The drainage should be enough so that the water does not stagnate for a long time. If you have a container garden with a clay pot, then you should check whether the potting bench has good drainage. You can just lift the pot and check the bottom for excess water. If there is excess water, then it means there is stagnant water in the pot. This will not only damage your plants, but it will also attract mould. If the excess moisture is not removed quickly, then mold will start growing in your containers.

A potting bench should also be selected based on the amount of light the plants require. Most container gardening plants need at least six hours of sunlight. If you have herbs, then the light requirement is much higher. Therefore, you have to choose a pot that has proper drainage to allow adequate sunlight to pass through.

Plants that prefer shade will require deeper pots. On the other hand, plants that are happy in direct sunlight should choose shallow potting soil. This will ensure that the light and heat coming from the sun do not affect their growth. Thus, you should choose the right kind of container for the plants before you plant them in the garden.

Another consideration is the potting bench. Make sure that the potting bench fits perfectly into the container. The bench should not extend beyond the rim of the pot. If the bench does extend beyond the rim of the pot, then you might have to add extra support to prevent the pot from tipping over.

Plants grown in pots with drainage holes often require additional support to prevent water from seeping out. However, plants that grow without drainage holes are more fragile so you have to make sure that the pot provides good support to the root system. In such cases, you might need to use silicone sealant to cover the drainage holes. This silicone sealant will prevent water from seeping out and thus ensuring proper root growth.

Another factor that you should consider before buying pots is the size of your pot. The size of the pot has an impact on the productivity of your plants. If you are going to buy a small pot, your plants might suffer from reduced root growth resulting in smaller and shorter blooms. On the other hand, if you buy a big pot, your plants can enjoy more space and larger blooms since bigger pots are able to accommodate larger and thicker roots.
