Why Should Flower Bed Be Higher Than Lawn?

Posted on March 5, 2021

There is a question that crops up at the back of everyone’s mind when it comes to flower gardens and the meaning of the flower bed. Is it better to plant a flower bed lower than a lawn? And if so, why? This article looks closely at the reasons why flower beds can be planted lower than a lawn and also why it may be a better idea to plant a flower bed lower than a lawn. After reading this article you will be able to decide if the flower bed is right for you or not. Happy planting!

First of all it must be stated that if you have space to spare then you should plant a flower bed as high as possible. Space management is the key here, as poor planning can lead to ugly flower bed construction. But remember, you get what you pay for, and sometimes flower beds cost more than their owners know. So be careful!

The reason why some flower beds are planted higher than lawns is to maximise air flow through the flower bed. Flowering plants need lots of sunlight, and they also need to get lots of moisture. So a flower bed in the shade can get no-where near as much water or light as a flower bed in the sunlight. This way they can be healthier and thrive.

Also, when planning your flower bed if you live in an area with harsh weather then you should consider planting your flower bed on a grass lawn. This will greatly reduce the amount of time needed to care for your garden, saving you a lot of effort. It will also minimise the amount of weeds that need to be removed. A beautiful lush green lawn looks great with a flowerbed in the summer and a flowerbed in the winter.

Many people think that they should plant their flower bed straight up in the flower garden grass. This can be OK if you live in an area that doesn’t have much grass to spare. However if you want to create a shady area in your flowerbed, you can do this by laying a layer of mulch over the flowerbed. However mulch is not ideal for flowerbeds as it does not allow the flower to breathe. If the mulch starts to turn yellow then it’s not been enough sunlight and moisture so your flower bed has needed to suffer.

Many people think that they should plant their flower bed directly in the grass. This is OK if you have a small space to work with or if you live in an area that is frost free. But for areas where the flower bed gets more than six inches of snow fall, then it may be better to remove the grass around the base of the flower bed. This will allow the grass to develop root cells and help the flower grow in a healthy way.

One other question you may be pondering when wondering “why should flower bed be higher than lawn?” is whether or not you should use fertilizer. The answer to this is that you should but only if you are using the correct type of fertilizer and you have applied the fertilizer correctly.

You should only use a liquid fertilizer such as Aminex with your flower bed. Liquid fertilizers will not take very long to break down. They are also easier to apply because you don’t need to go back and forth to your flower bed and lawn. Simply apply the fertilizer and then allow it to sit. Then water the soil. In fact, watering your flowerbed will only cause the grass to grow faster because the water makes the grass wet.
