What Is the Best Way to Water an Orchid?

Posted on March 5, 2021

Many orchid owners wonder what is the best way to water their orchid plants. Watering your orchids can be very different than watering your ordinary plants. Orchid plants have a shallow root system and do not enjoy soaking up water like other plants do. They actually prefer a drier atmosphere, so it is important that you know the proper way to water your orchid plants. Watering your orchid plants the wrong way can result in your orchids not looking their best or worse than when they were new.

One of the biggest mistakes that orchid owners make is misting their orchids instead of watering them. When you mist your orchid plants they are actually allowing excess water to evaporate into the air which means your orchid plants will not get the moisture they need. Instead, what you want to do is use a watering dropper to give them just enough water to sustain them but not more than that. Orchid flowers are actually best watered while they are still new. Watering them too much water can cause your orchid plants to become moldy and damaged.

When choosing the water you are going to use for your orchid plants, you should consider the season that you are getting the orchid for. If you are getting them for the summer season then you will want to choose a liquid fertilizer. It is best that you choose one with a high nitrogen level to help them grow. You should also make sure that you are giving your orchids the right amount of water. Watering your orchid plants too much water can result in your orchids becoming over-watered and die.

If you are getting your orchids for the winter season then there are many different fertilizers you can use. Some people even use organic fertilizers to help their orchids grow better. Just keep in mind that these fertilizers should only be used during the winter months. If you fail to follow this rule then you may end up killing your orchids by over watering them. Organic fertilizers can also cause your orchids to have too many problems with fungus and diseases.

If you are wondering what is the best way to water an orchid and still have them survive then you should put them in a plastic bag. Placing your orchids inside a plastic bag will keep them from drying out and from rotting to the roots. When winter sets in and you don’t have access to your orchid’s any way you can still water them by placing them in a plastic bag. They will still require a bit of extra care because they are not as hydrated as they would be if they were placed in a regular pot.

Knowing what is the best way to water orchid plants can be very helpful in growing your own orchids. Being able to know when orchids need more water and when they can just wait it out. This will save you a lot of time and money. Orchids don’t like too much water so wait when you are most likely not going to be around to give them anymore. Watering orchid plants will be a breeze if you know what to do.
