Planting Thyme Plants – Why You Should Consider It

Learning how to grow a thyme plant indoors can be fun if you have a window garden. This herb can thrive just about anywhere but has a more difficult time growing in soil that is too dry. It needs rich loam soil with lots of drainage. Too much silt and the roots will die.

There are several reasons why a thyme plant indoors will have a hard time outside. The most likely one for this reason is the location of the garden. If you put the herb in an area that receives a lot of sun, it will not thrive. They require a lot of sun to help burn off their nutrients. Plant them far enough away from windows that they receive at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.

Thyme plants are another crop that has to be watered often. They do not like being crowded. If your garden space is small, plan on one to two inches of water for each four to six inches of garden space. Herbs like a moist soil that does not sit on the surface long term. If you are growing thyme plants indoors they will appreciate being in a container pot rather than a regular garden bed.

Another problem that occurs with thyme plant indoors is insects. These can be leeches, aphids, borers, praying mantis and carpet beetles. All of these are bad news and can take a toll on your growing areas. Fortunately, you can control many of these problems by using natural repellants on your plant.

The third problem that can occur with thyme herbs is that the leaves may become brown and yellow. This is just growing old. To prevent this from happening, just wait for the flowers to drop off. If you prune them too early, you will stunt their growth. Wait until the seeds are completely dry before picking off the flower heads.

Thyme is an excellent indoor herb for growing year round. It grows well in full sun, partial shade or shaded areas. In addition, it will grow well with other herbs and even tomatoes. It grows tall and can reach six to eight feet in height. It is a perennial herb that needs to be divided every two years.

If you would like to grow a large amount of time, you can. It can even be grown on a windowsill. The key to growing thyme well is to remember that it likes full sun. You should provide it with as much sun as possible during the growing season. It will do very well in southern states but it does tend to do better in northern states.

One interesting way to use the thyme plant is to use it in cooking. There are many recipes that use the herb such as thyme oil for fish and chips. Thyme oil tastes good and it also smells good. If you cannot smell it in your kitchen, try putting a few drops of thyme oil on a little piece of garlic then burning it so it will not make a pungent smell.

Planting thyme plants in a garden is pretty easy. Just plant the herbs in the area where you want them to grow. You do not have to be an expert gardener to do this. All you need is patience and a little know how. The more you plant the herbs, the more they will grow, thus the more you can harvest in the end.

There are many types of herb to plant thyme. Some of the most popular ones are Rosemary, mint, chervil, oregano, sage and thyme. Some of these herbs do not like having too much sunlight and they do better if you place them in a shady area. Thyme plants are very easy to take care of and the best part is that you can harvest the herb especially well.
