How Long Can You Keep An Orchid Alive?

Posted on March 5, 2021

How long can you keep an orchid alive? You can find out the answer to that question by asking yourself a few questions. Can an orchid survive being kept in a pot? Can it handle being indoors most of the time? If you answer yes to all three questions, you might be ready to get an orchid plant or two of your own.

Most orchids will live for about two years outdoors. That’s where they are originally from, anyway. But, there is a bit of variation in the quality of life for different species. The biggest variable is the conditions under which the orchid was kept.

How long can you keep an orchid alive if it’s been kept in a dark, damp container? Some orchids can survive for a year or two outdoors in pretty poor conditions. Others can survive for more than two years or so, even in very dark and damp containers. Of course, most orchids do better if they are in their natural habitat outdoors, as long as the conditions they have to survive in are perfect. That means never watering the orchid plants, never letting them dry out between waterings and never putting any other plant or flowering shrub anywhere near them.

Can you keep orchids in a pot? That depends on the type of orchid you have. Most orchids that come from Asia and tropical parts of Africa can stay alive for two or three years in a well-drained pot. And, most of those that come from Europe or America can be kept for about a year in a similar pot. When you are caring for your orchid plants in a pot, just remember to make sure the pot can hold at least four or five orchids if you plan to put more than that into it. Otherwise, the roots of your orchid plant will be completely submerged, which is not very pleasing to the eye.

If you want to know the exact amount of time you have to give your orchid plants a chance to grow, you can actually calculate this yourself. There are orchid growth charts available online that you can print out and take with you when you go to the nursery or plant store. This gives you a good idea of how long can you keep an orchid alive. Also, you need to consider the quality of the orchid you are buying. There is nothing worse than getting a bad orchid because it was bought on sale at the supermarket, and it will probably never bloom again.

You should also look at how much light and water your orchid plant gets. If you are buying orchids from the wild, check out the National Park Service website or library for information about sunlight hours. How long can you keep an orchid alive depends largely on what kind you are buying. However, there are some plants that can live for decades in just one growing season. If that’s the case with you, then you need to do everything possible to ensure your new plant grows up to be a happy addition to your home.
