How Do You Maintain a Herb Garden?

Posted on June 28, 2020

Herb gardening is very easy to do if you follow some basic rules. You may have heard a lot of warnings about the dangers of doing gardening without a garden hose or if the ground is wet. These are both true, but you can get rid of these dangers by following the directions on the instructions that come with your garden hoses and watering equipment.

First of all, be sure to dry the soil and then re-wet it before you start any work. If the soil is already wet, the water will be much easier to get out when you are spraying the plants. Try to find an area that is shaded from the sun. The sun will kill your herbs if you do not keep the area shaded.

A nice place to do herb gardening is along a sidewalk or driveway. You will get the best results when the area is not heavily traveled. The sunlight will penetrate more deeply in this area.

Don’t be tempted to water your herbs too often. Watering too often can make the plants grow too fast, so there will be more dead plant matter. If you are lucky, you will get some beautiful flowers from the cuttings, but it will be more work for you to take care of the plants and will make your herb garden less productive.

You will want to water your herbs on a weekly basis. However, if you use the garden hose to water the plants, you should use a smaller amount. Spraying the water on the leaves of the plants can cause the plant to break and fall off. Take a slow deep spray every week and the plants will be much easier to take care of.

How do you maintain a herb garden and how do you make it more productive? You can make it more productive by pruning your herbs, cutting down on the number of flowers that you put in your garden. For example, if you are planning to add lots of fresh lemon balm to your herb garden, prune your herbs so that you only have two or three plants that are giving off scent. By cutting down on the flowers you are using, you are increasing the yield from the plants.

Another nice way to get your herbs to grow faster is to use this type of pruning called shearing. Shearing allows you to cut off the center of a plant and cut the stem as opposed to slicing the stem. This is a better way to go if you are planning to use a branch for another project.

A good watering schedule is one with a good mix of the two: a mix of full and short watering. You should try to follow the watering schedule of your nearest outdoors garden center or you can do some research and find a watering schedule that works for you. Some herbs like lemon verbena need to be watered once a day while others like thyme are best watered every other day.

Be sure to pick organic, natural plant foods that will grow in the environment that you are growing them in. You can get these from the grocery store, but the best thing to use would be a seed packet. Some people think that seeds do not make a good food for herbs, but they are very healthy and when using seeds as food, try to use the ones that are at least a year old.

How do you maintain an herb garden? Well, the first step is to be sure that your plants are getting the right amount of nutrients and you should keep them healthy by keeping them watered and mulched. If you have too much sun or too much shade, you should make sure that the plants are getting the nutrients they need.

When you have a nice looking herb garden, do yourself a favor and keep it in the ground. Herb gardens, even ones that are in pots, need to be given enough sun and good drainage so that they will be able to grow well. For example, winterizing or pruning is needed to keep the plants strong and upright.
