Growing Microgreens For Your Family

Posted on June 28, 2020

What is a micro green? Microgreens are tiny, succulent, green, and delicious plants that grow well in a hydroponic system. They are generally small and not very tasty, but growing microgreens isn’t difficult.

The stems, leaves, and flowers of these plants come from large clumps of roots, or rhizomes, that have been dug up from the soil. These roots were originally used to help in food production, but are now grown for other reasons.

Plants grown in this way are called root vegetables. Rhizomes are grown by division so the main stem has several smaller divisions growing off of it, in order to break down the roots.

These divisions are the plant’s edible root or edible harvestable shoots. Microgreens can be eaten raw, cooked, added to salads, or even made into a green smoothie.

The plant has been referred to as microphytoids, after the Greek word for a tiny plant. It is estimated that about one billion people around the world depend on the production of microgreens. However, growing microgreens isn’t difficult at all.

Plants can be grown in a traditional hydroponic setup. Other growing methods include container growing and aeroponics.

Hydroponics refers to the growing of plants in individual containers. The plants may be grown in small pots, or in large raised, fenced areas, but the plants must still be rooted and be able to root in their own soil. Container growing is a method that doesn’t require soil but does require a large open area to grow in.

Aeroponics is another method that involves adding nutrients to the air of a container. Plants that are aeroponically grown are commonly referred to as green vegetables. The plants get the nutrients in the air through their roots and transfer them to their leaves when they are ripe for consumption.

Having this type of growing system gives the consumer many benefits. Most people who use aeroponics find that it is much easier to maintain than hydroponics.

People who grow in aeroponics don’t need time spent on hand planting and harvesting the plant. An aeroponic grower only needs to spend time monitoring the temperature of the growing media and watering the plants when they need it.

Hydroponics is one of the oldest forms of growing green vegetables. It takes some of the work out of growing microgreens because the plant needs to be moved to a larger container. The container must also be kept moist, but doesn’t require the container to be moved.

It can be difficult to find a company that offers hydroponics, but if you are looking for low cost, then you may want to think about growing microgreens in an aeroponic system. You will be able to consume the root vegetables and their leafy tops without the hassle of labor.
