Are Orchids Expensive?

Posted on May 30, 2021

Are orchids expensive? Absolutely! Just ask anyone who has had orchid plants for a part of their life. Most of them will probably say “Ummm… no, they are not… but look at how expensive they are!”

Orchids are a popular plant to start with because they are extremely easy to grow and don’t require a huge amount of space in your house or garden. However, orchids do require some special care so that you can find orchids that are both cheap and easy to take care of. First of all, orchid flowers are actually quite stunning looking, and this is certainly true. Some orchids have incredible fragrances that catch the light and appear to dance. They also have beautiful blossoms that come in all different colors.

These orchids are very sensitive plants. In order to thrive they need a certain humidity level, a certain temperature and they need some basic care. If you do not take the time to do these things you are going to end up with flowers that are sickly, have diseases, and just not very pretty. This is why it is important to know a little bit about orchids before you decide that they are something you are going to want to purchase.

If you go to your local garden center or nursery, you are going to find that they have dozens of gorgeous flowers for you to choose from. Each one will look absolutely gorgeous, but most of them are going to smell like a forest with a few exceptions. You will get everything from wild flower smells like honeysuckle and sweet pea to citrus smells like lemon meringue and passion fruit. It can get overwhelming at times and if you do not know what you are looking for it can be very confusing.

Orchids also require a certain amount of light each day to grow at their best. There are three different types of orchid flowers that require light to grow properly and they are phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum and Ensymphonema. Most people think they are growing beautiful flowers when in fact they are not and the only way you are going to tell is if you can see your plant turn colors. It is not unusual for orchids to die from lack of water or if they have been stressed by too much heat. You may not be able to tell right off the bat, but once you are growing the flowers you will notice that they do require a little bit of extra attention.

Most people who are growing orchids at home are doing so because they are simply interested in having beautiful flowers on their plant stand. Some people love the idea of growing exotic plants and taking pride in their garden, while others are into it for the money. While the money you might make by selling your beautiful orchids is nice it is not the reason you are planting them in your yard. All that being said here are a few things you can try before you spend any money on orchid plants.

Watering is very important to the health of your orchid plants and there are a couple of ways you can do it. The first is to use a water sprayer that looks like a spray bottle from Home Depot or Lowes. When you water your orchids bloom they look beautiful and that is exactly what you are trying to achieve. The second method is to just mist the leaves of your orchid to ensure they get all the water they need.

Since orchids require almost continual care, you are going to want to grow orchids that are very easy to take care of. The easiest way to go about this is to buy orchid fertilizer from your local nursery. If you choose to try to grow some flowers that don’t require fertilizer you can always mix some fertilizer yourself. The best orchids to grow are the ones that grow on their own!
